The Maine Trip

 

Well here we are back safe in Sandwich, after our 500 mile round trip to Boothbay Harbour in Maine. The day we arrived was glorious and Jane and I took to the kayaks and paddled round the bay, while Peter and Pat, followed us in the dingy. Later on in the afternoon I didn't feel too good (don't think I'll ever make a sailor) so I took to my bunk. Four boating friends of Peter and Jane came over in the evening for food and they all sat out on the deck eating and drinking. I surfaced for a little while but had to leave the party and pretty well slept through until the next morning. Next day I felt much better. It was foggy for most of the day, with the mist rolling in and out but we went ashore for a walk around Boothbay and over to the other side of the bay to see where they bring in all the lobsters. Last night we went visiting on one of the friend's boat then went out for food. We then set out, Captain Bugg at the helm of the dingy, across the foggy harbour in the fading light back to Kinvara. Pretzel was happy to see her Mum and Dad had returned and not deserted her for good.

A beautiful day

I think that this is a blue jay, although it's not a very good picture. Will try to get a better one.

This is a chickadee on the feeder which the squirrel hasn't yet managed to find a way to attack it.

Today was a really lovely day. I did some washing and hung it out to dry, watched the birds in the garden and generally took things easy. Ryan, Pat & I went round to the driving range after Katy had gone to work and Ryan was taking film of Pat hitting the ball, using his new camera. We then went to do some food shopping and got some sting relief gel for the bites on my legs and arms.

Later on the squirrel continued to try and sabotage the bird feeder. I have managed to identify some of the birds in the garden and take a couple of good pictures & lots of blurred ones! I have seen, gray catbirds, blue jays, male & female cardinals, lots of chickadees, american robins and a couple of other species which as yet I haven't managed to identify. I also took some really good pictures of chipmunks which came really close to me when I was sitting out in the garden.

The squirrel vandals

Looked out of the window this morning to see 3 squirrels attacking one of the bird feeders on the ground! They had chewed through the plastic hanging strap of it and the seed bell was also on the ground after having been chewed from its hanger. War has therefore commenced! The hanging strap has now been replaced with a piece of metal coat hanger and the seed bell awaits a new strategy in the basement!
